Pitmaster Will Salazar (Husbands’ right hand) is Chef De Cuisine and Director of day to day culinary operations at The Smoke Shop BBQ restaurants. Originally from Mayport, Florida, Salazar knew from a young age he was meant to be in the kitchen. His very first food memory dates back to being taught how to “dress” a chicken by his grandmother at the age of 6.

Salazar studied Culinary Arts Management at Johnson and Wales University. Wanting to broaden his education and skill Will staged all over Europe, most notably at Guy Savoy and Taillievent. He first moved to Boston in 2001 to work under the tutelage of Geoff Gardner and Frank McClelland at L’espalier and Sel de la Terre. At Sel de la Terre, he rose to the position of Chef de Cuisine in 2007. After leaving Boston in 2010, he lived in New York City for 2 years, The US Virgin Islands, Argentina and then Chicago for 4 years where he worked as a sous chef at both Girl and the Goat and Little Goat.

Pitmaster Salazar was lured to the Smoke Shop by Director of Operations, Ian Grossman. Having been friends for almost 15 years, it had always been a goal of theirs to work together in some capacity. Will’s role at the Smoke Shop is to further define Andy Husband’s vision of “City Q” and to help others master the craft of BBQ- one of his favorite parts of the job.

His inspiration comes from a variety of places such as Spanish Surrealism, American Roots Music, Old Southern cook books and William Faulkner. His hobbies include biking, standup comedy (his jokes are great), and Transcendental Meditation. His favorite cocktail is the Vieux Carre and his favorite dish at the Smoke Shop is the Chicharron Style Crispy Tofu. William, 39, lives in East Cambridge with his dog Buster and wife, Sarah.
