Ian Grossman brings almost 30 years of experience to his role as Director of Operations and Partner of The Smoke Shop.

A Chicago native, Grossman spent the first 15 years of his career working in the kitchen, training at the Five-Star Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City, Utah, The Pierre Hotel in NYC and celebrity Chef Eric Ripert’s Le Bernardin, before graduating with honors from the Culinary Institute of America in 1999.

Grossman relocated to Boston in 1999, where he began to build his impressive pedigree in Boston’s restaurant industry, working both front and back of house as a manager at acclaimed Chef Frank McClelland’s L’Espalier, and later under Christopher Meyers and Michael Schlow at Radius. In 2006, Grossman moved on to accept the position as Chef and part Owner of Quince Bistro in Needham, MA, before rejoining McClelland’s team to open two locations of Sel de la Terre in Boston as General Manager. This experience instilled in him a passion for opening restaurants, and in 2010, Grossman went on lead the opening team of The Russell House Tavern in Cambridge, MA and Sweet Cheeks Q in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood the following year with his now business partner, Brian Lesser. Grossman worked alongside Lesser for the next three years as Project Manager for Speakeasy Hospitality Group, assisting with operations for new ventures including Bread + Butter Bakery in Boston’s North End and Naco Taco in Cambridge.

It was while working for Lesser that Grossman was introduced to Chef Husbands. The two realized almost immediately that they shared the same values in running restaurants and joined with Lesser to open The Smoke Shop in Cambridge’s Kendall Square in 2016. They have since gone on to expand The Smoke Shop brand as business partners, opening two additional locations in Boston’s Seaport District and its newest outpost in Somerville’s Assembly Row.

In his spare time, Grossman enjoys “good” rock and old school rap, and avidly explores his love of sushi. He currently resides in Boston’s South End with his (vegan) wife Aliza.
